De Bloei van AI

De bloei van AI

How can we encourage social media users to reflect on
the ethical implications of AI-driven content moderation on
freedom of expression?

Story

This data visualization was created for Bits of Freedom, an organization advocating for internet freedom in the Netherlands. It's based on the DSA Transparency Database, a dataset they shared openly.

The two flowers tell the story of content moderation on social media: one shaped by AI moderation, the other by human moderation. Their petals show how much content was removed or restored, while extra details highlight the balance between human and automated decisions.

By turning numbers into something visual, the work invites you to reflect and question the ethics behind who gets to decide what stays and what disappears.

The journey

Research
While exploring the dataset, our attention kept returning to the tension between AI and human moderation. We dove into the numbers across different platforms, searching for patterns and striking contrasts. That exploration quickly sparked multiple directions and ideas.

Development
Through discussions with Tessa and external supervisors, we shaped the concept of “De Bloei van AI.” From there, we experimented with colors, materials, shapes, and animation. I tested possibilities in Blender and After Effects to discover what best carried the story and gave a complete feel.

Reflection
This was the first project of the Meaningful Data Design minor with Bits of Freedom. With only four weeks, time was tight and decisions had to be made quickly. At first we struggled to settle on a concept, but through communication and collaboration we found direction. In the end, the process showed how fast iteration and dialogue can turn uncertainty into something meaningful.

"When machines decide what stays or goes, what happens to our voices?"
